President of sr. class wins bake contest

Mark Sorensen '65, recently won first place in the districts, and a third place award in the Midwest Grand Finals of the contest, "Bake Your Way to a BA."

This contest was sponsored by the Pyrofax Gas Corporation, and a scholarship of $2,000 was at stake. Competing were participants from 27 states and 36 districts of the U.S.

Mark first became interested in the contest after reading an article in a Chicagoland paper.

His first step in competition was to submit an essay on his reasons for going to college, and a copy of his recipe.
From these entries, 800 were chosen to go to the districts in Michigan City, Indiana.

In the district event, the competitors were given three hours to bake their recipes. Mark took first place in his district with his date-nut bread.

He then went on to Indianapolis, Indiana, Dec. 5th, for the Midwest Grand Finals, where he won a third-place award, a portable typewriter, an alpaca sweater, and a box of food.

"It was a real experience!" quipped Mark, "but the recipe's a secret."
