Seniors to represent maine in contest

Seniors Joyce Humay and John Bleharski have been selected to represent Maine West in the Elks' 1965 Youth Leadership Contest.

Last December each Maine West counselor recommended one student to be entered in the contest. Joyce was recommended by Mr. James Killam, and John was recommended by Miss Mary Dueland. Each student then made a brochure to be sent to the judges. These brochures consisted of a recent photograph, news clippings, and several letters of endorsement from responsible persons who have personally observed the applicants' abilities.

Also, an essay summarizing their accomplishments and qualifications for the awards was requested from each student. The parents of each applicant were asked to write describing his family background.
The applicants were judged on leadership, citizenship appreciation, perseverance, resourcefulness, and a sense of honor. The neatness of the brochure and compliance with given instructions were also considered.

After being chosen from MW, John and Joyce were entered at the local level, competing among the three Maine high schools' applicants. John came out on top and was sent to the district competition, where he won the boys' division. His application has now been sent to the state contest. He has already won $200 at the local and district levels. If he is victorious in the state competition he will go on to the National finals, where the first prize is $1,200 in U.S. Savings Bonds.
