Traditions Present at Maine |
||||||||||
| By Janice Nelson Since Maine West first opened its doors five years ago, many traditions have been molded into part of our accepted routine. We have come to look forward to events and activities that have become part of our school. In sports we have established a winning tradition that will continue to last for quite some time. Annually we capture Conference championships in football, basketball, cross-country, and baseball. The trophy that we share with Prospect has become a part of the athletic tradition at Maine. Our Music Department has established such events as V Show, the school musical, the Christmas concert, the Fine Arts Festival, and the Pow-Wow as part of the agenda for each year. Maine's marching band has taken awards for the last two years, starting a winning trend in more than athletics. |
The standards which Maine's scholars have set in the past, stand as goals for each student. The qualities of character remembered in "The Maine Way," are constant reminders of our road to greatness. Other traditions that we recognize each year M-Club initiation, the Faulty-M-Club basketball game, the choirs caroling down the halls at Christmas time, Senior Bermuda Day, Friday morning pep assemblies-may seem to be events and codes understood only among the student body, but they are traditions. They are a part of Maine West and of the student body, and of our spirit. Both the "Spirit of Maine West." the statue that solemnly guards the main entrance, and Willie the Warrior, the living symbol of our pep and vigor are brought about by the great school spirit and tradition. We have a relatively young school, and we are not so solidly molded that we cannot change. We can still shape the future history of traditions at Maine by adding some of our own. |
