Senior Is Assistant Mortician

By Dan Ost

Many people would consider Ron Van Scoyoc's job as a mortician's assistant a distasteful one, but he finds it both interesting and profitable.

Ron works after school from 4 to 7 p.m. at Oehler's Funeral Home. On Saturdays or Sundays he works from two to 10 hours.

His daily tasks include unloading and storing caskets, cleaning the funeral home, assisting in the leg work very necessary in preparing t h e wakes (which includes arranging the reposing room, greeting visitors and families of the deceased). He must also secure
death certificates and burial permits, act as a pallbearer, deliver flowers to the cemetery, and check the livery for oil and gas.

Ron finds that working at a funeral home has helped him to understand people better. It is a great help for him to work at a vocation that might someday be his life's work.

He feels that liking a job depends entirely on the employer and fellow employees. "If the employer is great to work for, and the other employees are congenial, then you can't help but enjoy working."
