Sports Slants

By Kent Lashway

ALL THE WINTER sports seasons are past the half-way mark now, and it's getting easier and easier to pick a winner in each.

There was little doubt at the beginning of the year, and now there is even less as to who will be the 1964-65 Mid-Suburban swimming champs. Deerfield, one of the top teams in the state, has yet to lose a Conference meet, and has yet to be seriously challenged. Maine will have to settle for either fourth or fifth in Conference, ahead of Forest View, Prospect, and Wheeling.

WEST'S WRESTLERS have done a creditable job after losing most of last year's top men, but have dropped two close ones, 21-20 to Deerfield and 21-17 to Prospect. This leaves them in third at the present time, and it looks as if this is where they will end up, behind second place Deerfield and unbeaten Prospect.
THE GYMNASTS ARE still undefeated in Mid-Suburban action and have a chance to capture the top spot if they can topple Prospect tomorrow night. The Knights, who have beaten 11 straight opponents, won't be easy to beat, but if the Warriors do stage the upset they hope for, Maine will have its first gymnastics championship.

THE LAST THING the varsity cagers need right now is an upset, for if there is one, they will be the victims. Right now they are riding comfortably on a 9-0 Conference record. They still have to play a second match with the two second-place teams, Forest View and Prospect, but those two have still one remaining game with each other as well as one each with upset-minded Glenbrook South, so things are looking better all the time for the netmen.

STATE COMPETITION in basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, and swimming starts in the near future. Maine will host the Regional in this area, and I'll preview the tournament in the next issue of The Westener. The Regional will be held March lst-5th. The wrestling District will be held on Feb. 12th-13th. District competition in gymnastics will take place on March 5th. The District swimming meet will be held on Feb. 19th and 20th.
