West Warrior

This week's honored athletes are two swimmers, Tom Gast and Dave Ladendorf. Both are members of Coach Baer's varsity squad.

Tom works as a waiter at the Des Plaines Oasis where he has worked at every job between "busboy and chef." Tom feels Maine is good because of its "high academic standards combined with its athletic achievement." This he feels, is due chiefly to the people at West. He notes that the school spirit is good for some sports; however, "more people would travel to a basketball game at Prospect than would walk 20 feet to the pool."

High on his list of pet peeves are "people who spout facts on something they know nothing about."

Tom swims the butterfly on the team and has held his position on the squad for three years, lettering twice. Determination and dedication are necessary for success in athletics, and Tom has a full measure of both.

College is in Tom's plans. He wants to go into law, possibly as a corporation lawyer. He is considering the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin. With a little scholarship aid, Tom could make Dartmouth College his alma mater. He hopes someday to go to Europe, working for a law or business firm. What is Tom looking forward to most in his later life? "Living!"
Dave, known to some as "Dork," is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weights 175 pounds. He enjoys swimming as a sport which provides lots of exercise. The most thrilling experience for this swimmer was being a member of the free style relay team which took second place in the District Meet last year.

Dave feels that in swimming, a person meets a lot of people. He adds that one must plan on working hard to succeed in both athletics and life.

Dave's pet peeves are "guys who think they're really tough, and people who don't use their turn signals."

Maine is a great school, Dave feels, but "something ought to be done about M-Club to make it more active."

Dave will attend Iowa State University and is thinking about going into bio-chemistry.
