Mainites Attend ISHSPA

The 45th annual convention of the Illinois State High School Press Association was held at the University of Illinois on Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18. Over 700 high school journalists with editorial positions on school newspapers and school year books, and their sponsors attended this convention. From the Westerner staff Marlene Lorenz '66, editor‑in‑chief, Chris Birchfield '66, co‑managing editor and Barb Lonchar '66, also co‑managing editor attended. From the Legend staff Wendy Geertz '66, editor‑in‑chief, and Sue Olson '66, business manager were also participants at the convention. Accompanying them was their sponsor, Mr. George Walker, journalism teacher.

Learning was emphasized at the ISHSPA convention. The 50 sessions that were held, helped to direct the 700 students towards future occupations on newspapers, yearbooks, and business programs.

Although the greater part of the convention was on education, there was still time for fun Friday night. Charlie Ponds with his world famous gymnastics and Johnny Crawford's orchestra entertained.

The students on the Legend and Westerner staffs returned with some really great ideas which they plan to use on the Maine West yearbook and newspaper.
