Four days ago I had to say good‑bye to America, and this made me very sad after having spent such a wonderful year in your country.
At this moment I am on my way to Europe by boat. I am no longer in America, but I am neither in Europe yet. Very often my thoughts are with Maine West, my host family the Stroms, and with Des Plaines.
Sitting on the decks, I started reviewing my year at Maine West, and I thought of the very first days at school which were very confusing to me. There were so many new people, so many new impressions, and I had to talk English all the time. Some months later was Homecoming. Student Council built a float for me which was another new experience. Then came Christmastime with Santa Claus and the beautiful Christmas decorations, Variety Show in February, and last but not least graduation time.
Altogether I can say that this past year has been the greatest in my life so far, and I am very grateful for everything you have done for me.
Whomever is going to the Netherlands, please feel free to visit me so that I can do a little bit back by showing you some of my country.
I shall start saving all my pennies, and maybe some day I will be back again.
Good‑bye now from, Carla
