Jim Kautz '66, and Steve Ryderi '66, are this year's first Warriors of the West. Jim and Steve both lettered in football last year, and each are returning lettermen to the team.
"I'm too serious and self‑conscious about everything," says Jim Kautz '66, who also has time to be out for wrestling and baseball, as well as football. By "not goofing around and by allowing enough time for studies and practices, " he has been able to keep his grades up.
Jim mentions that he has learned to respect other players and that he has developed good sportsmanship from participation in sports. His advice to newcomers in athletics is to be "willing to work hard and to give 110 percent all the time." Jim also admits that the most outstanding thing is being on the team. Football is his favorite sport because the game is one of a lot of action and is very interesting.
Jim thinks that the hardest part about training is the wind sprints, with grass drills as a close second. Playing touch football over the summer helped to keep Jim in shape for the school football season.
Among Jim's ambitions after graduation are to attend West Point Military Academy and to play football on the team there. He would also like to receive a football scholarship. Jim is also thinking about enlisting in the Marine Corps.

This active senior feels that "having more students come out and root for the teams, especially the minor sports," will improve the spirit of Maine West. Jim feels that the teachers and coaches are the most outstanding feature about Maine West because of their lively interest in working with students.
Jim's biggest pet peeve is "senior boys who do not come out for sports and do not show class spirit." When asked what his favorite foods were, he responded quickly saying, "steaks are okay, but I like shrimp and french fries."
Jim commented by saying, "Our team is working hard and we'll do great and take Conference."
"Stick with it and keep working hard," is the advice Steve Ryden '66, would give a boy going out for a sport. Steve is five feet nine inches tall, weighs 175 pounds, and has red hair and hazel eyes.
Steve enjoys football very much because it is a physical contact sport. He is one of the key men on the defense team which has not been scored against this year. Steve starts at fullback on offense. "This year's football team has a good chance of winning conference," he said.
Besides football, Steve went out for wrestling last year and received his varsity letter his first year out. Steve said his best match was with a boy who took third in State.
Steve would like to attend San Jose State University in California, and is looking forward to playing on the football team.
