'Elijah' To Ensue

On Friday, April 1, the members of Maine West's music department will present "Elijah," a famous oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be an innovation at Maine West; oratories have never been presented in the school before.

The unique feature about the "Elijah" is that each member in the chorus will be singing. The choir will consist of 200 members from A Cappella Choir, Girls' Glee, Girls' Chorus, and Boys' Chorus. Over 50 musicians consisting of members from orchestra and band will play in the Concert Orchestra.

Four professional soloists have been hired for the oratorios. The tenor soloist part will be performed by Mr. Howard Dill. Mr. Dill received his Bachelor of Music degree from North Central College. He later went on to receive his Master's degree from Northwestern University.

The baritone soloist will be Mr. Dale Gilbert, who portrays Elijah. Mr. Gilbert is the chairman of the Music Department at the University of Wisconsin.

Mrs. Marjorie Ebel will be the soprano soloist. Mrs. Ebel received her music degree from Oberline Conservatory of Music, Oberline, Ohio.

Miss Arlene Blaha, who will sing the contralto solo, played Elma Hicks in the nation‑wide presentation of "Music Man."

For those who are not musically inclined, an oratorio is an unstaged religious opera performed in church or in the concert hall rather than on the stage.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. performance are on sale in the bookstore. for $1.50.

Mr. Wilbur Schafer, choral director at Maine West, summed it up by saying, "We're eating and breathing 'Elijah' in choir. Things are going well."
