Mr. Louis Bergdolt, Maine West physics teacher, is going to make an extraordinary trip this spring. He will fly to New Delhi, India, on April 13 and will remain in that country for eight weeks acting as a consultant in the Summer Science Institute for Secondary Teachers program.
The Indian Ministry of Education invited Mr. Bergdolt to participate in this program. The program is a cooperative effort between the United States Agency of International Development and the Indian Ministry of Education. Each institute will be held at a different Indian university and will be staffed by the professors of the university plus one American college professor and one American high school teacher.
Since Mr. Bergdolt is very well-acquainted with the new physical Science Study Committee physics program, he expects to act as a consultant with regard to introducing similar materials in that country. He is not sure as yet where he will be sent once he arrives, but he believes he will be located in the South of India. Mr. Bergdolt also believes that one of the factors that influenced his selection

by the Indian government was the fact that he spent the years from 1950 to 1956 in Southern Rhodesia as an educational missionary of the Congregational Church.
A recipient of a Master's degrees in both physics and education, he taught in 1957 and 1958 at Maine East and has been teaching here since Maine West's opening in 1959. The Bergdolts have four children, one of whom, Anita, is a junior at Maine West.
Mr. Bergdolt says that he is "looking forward to the experience" and would like to thank the school board for granting him a leave of absence during the school year. He also appreciates the help of Mr. Rollin Porter and Mr. Steven Cross, Maine West science teachers, who will take over Mr. Bergdolt's physics classes and science seminar.
On the way to India he will be stopping at Frankfurt, Germany, and Istanbul, Turkey, where he spent some time during World War II. Mr. Bergdolt will be coming back to the United States by way of Rome, Italy, and Paris, France.
