MW Captures Second In
Triangular Meet

In a triangular meet with Maine East and Maine South the Maine West varsity track team placed second with 541/2 points. Maine East won the meet with 70 points, and Maine South was third with 50 points. The first five boys to finish the event received points for their five places in the school. In the relay races only the first boys to finish were awarded points.

Vern Ray, the top 50‑yard‑dash man and best in the low hurdles for the Warriors, did not run because of illness. Bob Rosedale captured a third for the Warriors in both the 50 yard dash and the broad jump.

In the 880 yard run the trackmen took four places. Kevin Flurkey was edged out in a close race and took second; Ed Lusk captured third; Phil Martin and Lee LaBadie placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Jim Braun ran to a second place for the Warriors in the 440 yard dash, and Ed Lush came on strong to grab third. The trackmen gained 12 points in the mile run as Lee LaBadie crossed the finish line first, while Doug Chase crossed the line second; Phil Martin sped in fourth. Joe Elliott placed third in the low hurdles for the Warriors.

The mile relay team of Jim Hren, Mike Johnstone, Gary Keehn, and Jim Braun placed second. LeRoy Peterson won the high jump, and Wally Tistle placed fourth. Roy Schmidt and Roy Svenson placed fourth and fifth respectively in the shot put. Jim Mueting took a third in the pole vault.

The varsity trackmen captured a fourth in the Proviso West Invitational in which the host school, Proviso West, won. Thirteen schools participated.

The only first for the Warriors was by junior Ed Lusk as he put on a tremendous burst of speed to win the 660 yard run. Another distance man, Kevin Flurkey, placed third in the 880 yard run.

The 880 yard relay team of Bob Rosedale, Jim Hren, Vern Ray, and Ken Mandelky ran to a fourth. Vern Ray also jumped into a second place in the low hurdles as he edged out Maine South's star hurdler Ed Ward. Ward won the high hurdles event.

Warrior Phil Martin placed fourth in the 1,320 yard run. Sophomore Lee LaBadie turned in an incredible 4:29.8 mile for a second place.
