Demons Win Over West By One Point

Coach Freeman's varsity basketball team opened play in the Maine East Regional last Tuesday and upset Forest View, 59‑52. On Thursday, however, the Warriors were downed by the Demons of Maine East, 52 to 51, on a last second free throw by Demon Mitch Adams. East turned out to be the surprise team of the tournament as they then beat Maine South in the championship game, 46 to 45.

On Tuesday against the Falcons the Warriors coupled good shooting and a tight defense to move into a 17 to 10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Maine's bulge was threatened in the third period as Baumgardt began to rebound and Falcons Borgardt and Lambert drove for lay‑ins and short jump shots. Ken Mueller of the Warriors refused to let Forest View steal the lead, however, as he poured in five buckets to gather all ten of the Maine points. Ken finished the game with a season high of 30 points

The final period opened well for the Warriors as Fritz and Moehling took the boards away from Baumgardt and the Maine press began to achieve results. When Maine posted leads of nine and 11 points, the overanxious Falcons started fouling; and the Warriors continued to make a good percentage of their free tosses to keep the margin intact. The final score was Maine West 59 and Forest View 52.

Maine East was the next opponent for the Warriors, and both teams were coming from upset wins. The Demons had beaten tall Notre Dame which had just finished its most successful season.

Maine West could not cope with the deadly outside shooting of the Demons in the game. By the half, Maine East led 22‑21. With only eight seconds left, Maine East sunk the final basket and won the game 52‑51.
