$100 Scholarship
Contest Starts March 30

The thirtieth annual American Legion Constitution Contest is being offered to Maine West students with the purpose of encouraging more serious study of this document upon which our form of government was founded.

Everyone who is interested should register with his present social studies teacher. However, since being enrolled in a social science class is not a requirement, students not taking such a course at this time may sign up with Mr. William Suffield, committee chairman, in room C‑217.

The contest consists of two tests. The first is objective and will be given in room A‑201 on Wednesday, March 30. One week later the seven students who score highest on the first test will take an oral examination. About ten minutes will be spent quizzing each of the students. These exams will basically try to discover their interpretation and understanding of the Constitution. This second testing, which will determine the final winner, is to be held in the Library Conference Room on April 6 at 7:30 p.m.

As a help to interested students, books pertaining to the Constitution have been placed on reserve in the library. Also, copies of the oral examinations which were used in past years are available and will be given to anyone upon request. It is advised that these materials be consulted in preparing for the test.

The winner of the contest will receive a $100 scholarship. The use of this money is not restricted to college alone; it may be applied toward all types of further schooling ‑ trade, technical, and business schools included. The name of the winning student will be inscribed on the plaque in the Maine West library.

Mr. Suffield commented, "I would like to encourage all students, especially seniors, to enter this contest and give us the biggest turnout possible. Also, it should be emphasized that every one has a very good chance of winning."
