The story of Elijah is quite dramatic. Elijah is a prophet who came to Israel. He finds the Israelites have fallen away from the true God and that they now believe in a false god, Baal. Elijah mocks these Israelites and their god.
For several years there had been a drought over all of Israel. Elijah dared the priests to have Baal make it rain. In anger the priests of Baal offer sacrifices to Baal and pray to him, but Baal doesn't heed their prayer.
Now it is Elijah's turn to pray. He prays to God. Soon after, the sky darkens, and it begins to rain. The Israelites know then that Elijah's God is the one, true God; and they slay the prophets of Baal.
The last dramatic scene of the oratorio occurs when Elijah ascends a very high mountain and is taken into Heaven with the Lord.
Tickets for the oratorio are $1.50 each and may be purchased in the bookstore.
