'Areba' and 'Ols' Participate In
Student Council

"Areba" has been the nickname of 5' 6" Betty Riska since eighth grade, but she doesn't know how she got it. This redhaired, brown‑eyed girl is this year's Social Committee Chairman of Student Council. Drawing is her hobby, but she spends most of her spare time at the Red Balloon and in Old Town, playing charades, and going to see Betty Davis movies with her friends.

Besides all that, Betty has found time to participate in two V‑shows. Last year she was publicity chairman, and this year she was business manager of V‑show. Also she was junior prom chairman last year.

Her pet peeve is crowded buses, and that probably is the reason why she would like to improve Maine by having better bus service. She feels that "Academics is the most important thing about Maine because that's what we're here for."

Her funniest incident occurred when she and Bill Jonas went to Randhurst to look for wigs for V‑show. "On the way home we were talking so much we forgot where we were going and ended up on the Indiana tollway. I had to pay 70 cents to get off. Typical."

Then in her junior year her most embarrassing moment occurred. She and Bill Jonas went down to ask Mr. Cochrane if Judy Garland could come to the ,junior prom.

"Plan your career early enough so that you don't have to panic your senior year" is her advice to students.

Betty dislikes having only five minutes between periods. But then, a certain senior boy who sings in a combo, is the best thing about Maine.

Last summer she worked in a clinic with a pediatrician. Her future plans are to go into nurse's training at Chicago Wesleyan Memorial Hospital.

Although Betty hasn't traveled much, she would like to go to Egypt in the future. Then also, she would like to see New York City when she's "a star on Broadway!"

Linda Olson, Organization Committee Chairman of Student Council, thinks the best thing about Maine West is "the way the school ranks among the others." She added, "It ranks high scholastically and is something to be proud of."

This blond‑haired, blue‑eyed, 5' 6" senior thinks that "Kids should enjoy themselves in high school and take advantage of the facilities and activities that are available to them." She feels students should participate in high school just to get the most out of it.

"Ols," as she is sometimes called, doesn't like to see the kids tramping on the emblem. She feels that to improve Maine West the lunch periods should be longer so the students can relax a little while.

Linda's hobbies include swimming, watching drag races, horseback riding, and traveling. In her spare time she works, does homework, is secretary of the youth group at the Y.M.C.A., and participates in school activities.

"The various activities and clubs offered to the kids, especially Student Council, which plays an important part in the school" is what Linda related as the most important thing about Maine. "I wish kids could be more involved with Student Council."

Linda has participated in Student Council, National Honor Society, and Brotherhood Society. She was also this year's Snow Queen for the Christmas Formal.

The funniest incident of Linda's life occurred when the family car backed out of the driveway by itself without anyone in it. She said they have a narrow driveway so it was lucky it didn't hit anything.

As for her most embarrassing moment, Linda said that at her sister's wedding she was maid of honor. During the ceremony a bee landed on her flowers, and she almost screamed.
