||||||||
|
The preliminaries to the State Gymnastics Meet were held on Friday, March 11, at Willowbrook High School in Villa Park. The three gymnasts from Maine West attending the meet were Larry Scully, who worked the side horse: Ron Sass, on the horizontal high bar and all-around; and Dennis Zick as a tumbler. Scully placed sixth in the side horse competition allowing him to participate in the State meet held Saturday, March 12. Sass took thirtieth on the high bar and twenty‑eighth as all‑around and was eliminated from the State meet, as was Zick, who took nineteenth in tumbling. |
Willowbrook was a close second with 53 points. With only one event left‑tumbling‑Proviso East was in first and Willowbrook in fifth. Willowbrook had three tumblers while Proviso East had only one. All the Wiliowbrook tumblers came through and hit their routines. It was now up to Proviso East's Leslie Sergeant. He did well, took second place in tumbling, and clinched the championship for his team. |
