MW Faces Oak Park Relay

Tomorrow the Maine West varsity trackmen will participate in the Oak Park Relay, which is the biggest indoor track meet of the year. This meet will begin at 12:30 p.m.

In the tough Evanston Relays, Maine West placed ninth out of 13 schools. Last year's State Champions, Evanston, dominated the meet with a total of .95 points.

Head track coach Mr. Joseph Jobst stated that "In the past years the Evanston Relays have been tougher competition than the Oak Park Relays." Mr. Jobst also cited, "The Maine West track team should have a better outdoor season than an indoor season if we do not have any injuries."

Picking up points for the Warriors at the Evanston Relays were the two‑mile relay team of Phil Martin, Lee LaBadie, Kevin Flurkey, and Ed Lusk. Bob Rosedale was able to leap 20' 6" for fifth place in the broad jump. LeRoy Peterson tied for fifth in the high jump, and Lee LaBadie captured fourth in the mile run.

Maine West's varsity track team lost a dual meet to Palatine 66 to 43. The Warriors captured five firsts out of the 13 events in this meet. This was the third dual meet that the trackmen have lost his year; they have won two.

In the field events for the Warriors, Jim Mueting won the pole vault; LeRoy Peterson and Wally Tistle places second and third respectively in the high jump; and Jim Hren, Joe LeCastro, and Ken Mandelky ran to a first in their event.

The MW trackmen swept the two mile run with Lee LaBadie finishing first, Doug Chase capturing second, and Bob Zografos placing third. Maine's Ed Lusk finished first in the 380 yard run with a time of 2:00.4, which is Lusk's best time yet this year. Phil Martin placed second in this event.

Kevin Flurkey captured second in the 440 yard dash with a time of 52.9 seconds, which is also the best indoor time for the Warrior season. Bill Bahnfleth of Palatine, who placed fifth in the State meet last year, won the 440 yard dash with a time of 52 seconds.

Lee LaBadie won his second event, the mile run; and Doug Chase finished third for Maine in this event.

Even though Palatine beat the varsity trackmen indoors, MW will have a chance to meet them outdoors, where there are more events and the Warriors will have a stronger chance of winning. Palatine will also face the trackmen in the Mid‑Suburban Conference meet. Other teams in the Conference are Forest View, Prospect, Wheeling, and Conant.

Some of the boys that have had a fine indoor season are Lee LaBadie, Ed Lusk, and Vern Ray. Besides these three boys, Kevin Flurkey, Phil Martin, Jim Hren, LeRoy Peterson, Jim Braun, Doug Chase, Bob Rosedale, and Ken Mandelky have turned in some good performances and should do well during the outdoor season.

According to Mr. Jobst, "The team has been working hard for their first outdoor meet, which is a quadrangular meet." This meet will be held April 7 at the Maine West track starting at 4:15 p.m.
