Although Vernon Ray has been on the track team since his freshman year, he has always regretted leaving his position as wing‑back for the B‑team of football which he played during his freshman and sophomore years. Vern wished he had continued in football since "It feels like there is more team spirit." Leaving the team was just one of the high school decisions he has had to make.
Having already lettered in his junior and senior years in track, Vern presently competes in the low hurdles, the 50, 100, and 220 yard dashes, and runs in the 880 yard relay. "The hardest part about running," Vern explained, "is the actual concentration on running. Many kids don't think about running and lack that needed determination." Vern's most outstanding meet came during the Proviso West Invitational Tournament, where he outran Ward of Maine South to capture second place in the low hurdles for Maine West.
Indoor track is best for the low hurdles and the dashes, believes Vern, for when competing inside, the runners do not have to fight the elements of the weather such as strong winds and cold temperatures.

Following graduation Vern is either planning to attend a trade school, work, or enlist in the army. He would like to study to become an electrician, contractor, or have some part in helping to construct buildings. "I feel that the army would teach me responsibility," stated Vern, "and would give me a chance to be on my own in the world." He would also like to leave since he believes "Des Plaines is boring."
Girls and cars are Vern's only hobbies. Roast beef is his favorite food, and for pets Vern has two dogs and two cats.
Of course, Vern thinks that the Maine West coaches are the greatest, and he would like to see more people turning out for minor sports to help build the team spirit.
When asked how he feels the track team will do this season, Vern stated, "I think we'll do very good in Conference and District."
