A collection for CARE began this week and will continue through Monday, April 25. This marks the first time that Maine West High School has given to this private, non‑profit organization, whose name stands for "Cooperative for American Remittances to Everywhere"
The service committee of Student Council undertook this drive after the idea for it was suggested by a student. They have also been responsible for Teacher Appreciation Day, the installation of the apple machine, the purchasing of a banner which will be mounted in the pool area, and, in general, things which are considered to be of a service to the school.
Five hundred dollars has been set as the mark which will hopefully be attained at the end of this week‑long period. The money, that is still being collected in the homerooms and the cafeteria, will be used to provide the war‑stricken South Vietnamese with many needed supplies. Originally, the plan had been for this to be a soap drive, for soap is a rarity among many of these people. However, the feeling was that CARE would be able to put the money to the best possible use. It is upon our request that the money will be used to aid Viet Nam.

Bill Prentice '67, chairman of service committee, urged "Please give to this very worthy cause. All that we need is five cents per person in order to make our goal. But of course, you are welcome to give more!"
Donna Ladendorf '67 is in charge of the publicity, and Linda Wells '68 obtained the supplies needed for this collection.
Other students who serve on this committee are Sue Odom '68, Geoff Sorenson '68, Pam Kariotis '69, Carol Nowak '69, Mary Wencil '69, and Joan Beyer '68.
To encourage contributions, the money is being totaled separately for each class. There are two more days of collection left, and any class can still come in first. The winning class will be determined by the average amount of money that was given by each student.
