John, Barb, and Jim Preside Over
Active Clubs at MW

"People that act too cool" is Jim Mathieson's pet peeve. This 5' 8" senior has brown hair and brown eyes and is the president of Boys' Business Club. As president, it is Jim's responsibility to interest boys in the business world and in the club. The purpose of the Boys' Business Club is "seeing that a great percentage of high school graduates enter the business world."

He would improve Maine by getting rid of the kids that don't try and are just "goofing around." When asked what he thought was best about Maine West, Jim replied, "It's a good way to meet people." Besides that he said it "gives kids unity." Elaborating further on that subject he expressed the opinion that "Adults are too suspicious and critical. So Maine is also a good place where teenagers can be together without being scorned."

His hobbies include riding his Honda and "taking girls out to the Hut, the Green Gorilla, and 'stuff' like that."

His favorite classes are accounting and computer programming. He advises students to "participate more in clubs and is taking Accounting II, English IVW, analytic geometry, computer programming, earth science, and economics this year.

He is looking forward to attending Northern Illinois University and would like to "first go to college and then make a million dollars. I love money, so I guess I'll have to be an accountant."

Jim hasn't traveled much, and he doesn't have any nicknames. His favorite foods include pizza and Maine West hamburgers.

Jim qualified for the Jewel Tea Company scholarship and was also a semi‑finalist in the Illinois State Scholarship Tests.

The other officers of the club are vice‑president, Phil Heller; secretary, Bruce Mac Donald; and treasurer, Paul Halverson.

Barb Manning, president of Girls' Business Club this year, enjoys the club very much "because there are so many nice girls always participating in the activities and helping with the projects."

She said that at present the Girls' Business Club is planning a field trip and starting to work on the awards banquet.

This 5' 4", red‑haired, grey-eyed, freckled senior has participated in Girls' Business Club, Pep Club, Home Economics Club, GAA, and Stagecrafters during her past years at Maine.

Barb's hobbies include sewing, collecting buttons, and talking on the telephone.

Barb's main complaint about Maine West is having to share lockers. She said, "This is the first year I haven't had to share a locker, and it's great!" She said that Maine West needs a fieldhouse and longer lunch periods for the students.

Barb said the two funniest experiences of her life happened when the doorbell rang the night of the junior prom and 'my formal wasn't finished." She added, "The same thing happened this year at homecoming‑my suit wasn't quite finished when my date came."

"Wart" or "Barbie," which are Barb's nicknames, said that she has had so many embarrassing moments everyday that by the end of the week she cannot decide which one was the most embarrassing.

Freckle‑faced Barb said that her pet peeve is riding to school in her brother's car which is called the "grey beauty."

Barb said her spare time is spent with a "certain" foreign exchange student from France who goes to St. Viator's. She said that she also works part time in a drugstore.

After graduation, Barb's plans include going to Wisconsin State University in Oshkosh. She plans to major in elementary education there. When she graduates from college, she is planning on returning to Illinois to teach kindergarten.

"I wish there were something I could say that would promote membership, especially that of the sophomores and juniors, into Key Club," replied this year's president, John Ellis, 6' l" senior with brown hair and brown eyes. "Key Club is a service organization to the school that tries to promote school spirit and perform worthwhile projects for the school and the community. Members of Key Club are supposed to perform these actions.

My pet peeve is guys who join just to get their pictures in the Legend."

Although the administration of Key Club and its projects takes most of his time, John also finds a little time for his hobby‑cars. Therefore, his nickname, "GTO," applies.

When asked what he thought was best about Maine West, John replied, "The kids. They're very friendly and a credit to the school." He also advises students to "work hard and try to build up school spirit."

John is taking law, English, chemistry, and family living and hopes to attend Drake University in Iowa and major in pharmacy. Later, he wishes to join the air force.

John said that the only thing he dislikes about Maine is the gym classes, but he also said he realizes that it's necessary to have physically fit students. He would improve Maine by "letting Student Council have more say." Although outside activities are important, he also said that the most important thing at Maine West is "the opportunity to learn"

His most embarrassing moment and funniest incident are one and occurred two weeks ago when the election assemblies were taking place. "I was to make the seconding speech for Bill Prentice," John related, "and after walking on the stage about three minutes late, I said, 'Hi! I'm John Ellis.'

John's favorite food is "Whoppers," and he works for both the National Tea Company and Clark Gasoline.

His favorite city and state are Amarillo, Texas; and he has traveled extensively throughout the South.

Once again John asks for "interested students and willing workers" to join the Key Club. The other officers for this year are Gunther Semper, vice‑president; Paul Bourgeois, secretary; Dan Thal, treasurer.

Mr. Eldon Burk is the sponsor of the club. Key Club is a nationally organized club with a national charter. Local businessmen also give some of their time to helping the members plan and execute their activities.
