Drama Classes Present Plays

This week two drama classes, coached by Mr. Garth Boyer, put on one‑act plays as part of their assignment. Weeks of hard work and memorization went into the productions. Student directors were put in charge of each play so that complete cooperation could be attained.

Scenery, props, and original costumes added to the performances of each play. Programs were handed out to each member of the class before the plays were staged.

"When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet" is the title of one of the one‑act plays performed in both of Mr. Boyer's drama classes. In one performance Marlene Lorenz '66, plays Portia; Corky Higgins '67, Desdemona; Karen Spalla '66, Ophelia; Pam Williquette '66, Cleopatra; Jan Grubert '67, Katherine; and Priscilla Suda '66, Juliet. The play concerns the ladies in Shakespeare's plays when they met to give advice to Juliet about her romance with Romeo. As the play closes, the moral of the story could be "You can't teach Juliet anything."

"Hello Out There" is another of the one‑act plays. Here Bob Burgess '66, and Beth Radcliffe '66, take the lead roles. Bob is a man who is in jail when he meets Beth who is a clean‑up girl in the jail. The dramatic conclusions of this play were that, after falling in love, Bob is killed, but not before he inspires Beth to go on to bigger and better things.

"Why I'm a Bachelor" stars Mark Burchard '66, as the narrator, Elma Hall '66, as Henrietta, Steve Wischweh '66, as Algernon, and Barb Dormeyer '68, as the daughter. Other plays are "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals," "The Plum Tree", "The Flattering Word".

Mr. Boyer feels that doing these one‑act plays in costume and with props gives the students good play‑acting experience.
