Badminton Begins

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BIRDIE! This is the cry that has echoed in C‑wing gym during the month of March as the intramural badminton games took place. On March 24 the final tournament match between Leora Winski '66 and Bonnie Junius '67 was held with Bonnie emerging as the champion.

In the extramural games the badminton team has participated in three league matches with the team standing at 1 win, I loss, and I tie. Miss Corrine Clark, advisor, describes the match against Maine South on March 8, as a game where "Our team played host to Maine South: and we were most polite, as Maine South was victorious, 5‑1."

The outcome of this game showed the following results in the singles play: Kay Watson (MS.) defeated Bonnie Junius '66 (M.W.); Cindy Gernhofer (MS.) defeated Terry Marlin '67 (M.W.); Elizabeth Grange '67 (MW.) defeated Chris Baltzer (MS.).

In the doubles play of this match at Maine South, the results were Schuessler‑Turnstrom (MS.) defeated Schacht '66‑Winski '66 (M.W.); Drengberg‑Goodrich (M.S.) defeated Currier '66‑Fick '66 (M.W.); Button‑Holdsworth (MS.) defeated Petty '67‑Rische '67 (MW.).

On March 29 the team traveled to Glenbrook North and gained a split in matches, 3‑3, with the following results: Singles‑Bonnie Junius (M.W.) defeated Markette (G.N.); Millar (G.N.) defeated Elizabeth Grange (MW.); Diane Schettko (M.W.) defeated Tiner (G.N.); and Kretsch (G.N.) defeated Kohl (MW.). The doubles results were: Olson and Grennan (G.N.) defeated Winski and Schacht (MW.); and Currier and Fick (M.W.) defeated Dettman and Ruszcak (G.N.).

On March 31 the badminton team was scheduled to play Maine East. This game was forfeited in favor of Maine West. The game will not be replayed thus crediting Maine West with a win.

Final matches will be held following Easter vacation. The team will travel to Evanston and will play Niles West on the home court.

The schools participating in the badminton league are Evanston, Glenbrook North, Maine East, Maine South, Niles West, and Maine West.

The championship basketball game was held in C‑wing gym on March 29 with Sue Stein's '67 team defeating Marie Marrese's '68 team. The score was 21‑12 with Ruth Christian '67 the high scorer with 10 points.

Keeping in step with the season, GAA will begin two new spring sports, baseball and golf, after Easter vacation for all interested girls.
