"Good team effort and a big win for Gus Herrero," is what head tennis coach Mr. Roger King thought of the first meet for the Maine West varsity tennis team. Maine West won their own invitational meet with 23 points. Homewood‑Flossmor finished second with 17 points; Lake Park took third with 9 points; and Barrington fourth with 7 points.
All four teams were Conference champs last year, and Homewood‑Flossmor won their District last year. Warrior racketmen took four first places out of six in the singles competition and won two first out of three in the doubles matches.
In his first match at first singles Maine's foreign exchange student Gus Herrero beat Terry Knight of Barrington, 10‑6. Knight is Barrington's foreign exchange student and is one of the top players in South Africa. In the finals Herrero beat Lindberg of Homewood‑Flossmor who went to State last year 6‑4, 6‑0.

Dennis Doyle, who was Maine West's most valuable tennis player last year, won 10‑3 in his first match and won 6‑3, 6‑3 to take the championship in the second singles. Sophomore Tom Martin took first place in third singles as he won 10‑7 in the first round and 6‑3, 6‑0 in the finals.
In the fourth singles Ed Challberg won his first match 10‑5 but lost 7‑5, 8‑6 in the finals to place second for the racketmen. Maine's John Stone won 10‑5 in his first match and won the championship in the fifth singles 1‑6, 6‑3, 6‑4. Don Clark won 10‑2 in the first round for the racketmen but lost 6‑4, 2‑6, 7‑5 to take second in sixth singles.
Maine's first doubles team of Gus Herrero and Dennis Doyle won 11‑9 in the first round and 6‑2, 6‑3 for the title. The second doubles team of Tom Martin and Ed Challberg won both of their matches to place first
