MW Trackmen Meet Morton West

Today, the Maine West varsity and frosh‑soph trackmen travel to Morton West for their second outdoor meet of the year. The trackmen lost by two points to Morton West in an indoor meet earlier this season. Morton is led by Larry Erickson, who is one of the best sprinters in the state.

In their first outdoor meet of the year the Maine West varsity track team won a triangular meet with 68 points. Wheeling placed second and Prospect took third.

The broad jump saw Maine's Bob Rosedale placing first and Joe LeCastro placing fourth. LeRoy Peterson won the high jump for Maine, and sophomores Jim Mueting and Bob Wahls placed second and third respectively in the pole vault. Roy Svenson took third and Ernie Fulbright took fourth in the shot put, and Tom Christensen placed fourth in the discus.

Junior Doug Chase won the two mile run, as Warren Schneider took third and Harry Chiles took fourth in this event. Bob Rosedale won the 100 yard dash, and Vern Ray finished second.

Kevin Flurkey captured a first in the 880 yard run with a time of 1:59.4, which is the best time for a Warrior runner in this event. Phil Martin finished behind Flurkey as he came in second. Maine's 880 yard relay team of Vern Ray, Jo LeCastro, Joe Elliott, and Ken Mandelky ran to a first.

Jim Braun placed third in the 440 yard dash, and Tom Postema placed fourth for the cindermen. Vern Ray took a third in the 180 yard low hurdles for the cindermen.

Sophomore Lee LaBadie turned in a tremendous time of 4:22 to win the mile run and set a new school record and a new field record. Both records were previously held by John Greco. LaBadie's time is also one of the best mile times in the state. Phil Martin came back after the 880 yard run to place second in the mile run.
