This week's Warrior of the West is 5' 6", 125 pound Jim Hren, who feels that from sports he has gained "responsibility, sportsmanship, and have learned to realize that to accomplish something requires hard work".
Jim, who is a junior, has light‑brown hair, blue eyes, and is on the varsity track team. In track he participates in the broad‑jump, the 4‑lap relay, the mile relay, and also the 440 yard dash.
Jim's only dislike about Maine West is our lack of school spirit. He wishes that students would improve our school by "at least giving the minor sports, such as track and wrestling, a chance‑by going to the meets and matches."
The coaches and most of the teachers are the things that Jim thinks are best about Maine West. He feels that the hardest part of training for track is "working hard for your own good." He added that to participate in sports a boy has to give up a lot, such as other extra‑curricular activities.

Lettering in track before this year and planning to letter again this year in track, Jim said that all of the track meets have been a real thrill, but particularly the Proviso meet of a few weeks ago.
Born on the continent of Europe Jim lived in Austria until he was about five or six years old. Jim also revealed that his father was a semi‑pro football player.
Girls, especially a certain cheerleader from Maine East, are Jim's main hobbies. His favorite big‑time athlete is the football player Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears.
Because Jim will be too old to participate in high school extramural sports next year and upon recommendation of his coach, the Westerner believed it worthwhile to break tradition to have a junior as Warrior of the West.
