Golfers Build Future Team

The Maine West Golf team has had four meets so far this year and has lost all but one. This fact does not bother Mr. Eugene Zuccarini who states, "This year is a building year. We only plan on winning one or two meets. Right now we have three sophomores ‑ Dave Grutzius, Ken Helfers, and Dave Krowka ‑ on the varsity team. Our other two starters are juniors Rich Merk and Larry Coffman. So, if the team stays together next year, '68 should be quite good for us. This year, you know, we have no returning lettermen."

The meet that the team won this year was the first one, played against Wheaton at Lake Park on April 15. The Warriors won by one stroke‑Maine 185, Wheaton 186. Merk shot a 44, Helfers a 46, Krowka a 47, Grutzius a 48, and Coffman a 50. Since only the four top scores are totaled for the team, Coffman's 50 was left out.

On Monday, April 11, t h e Warriors traveled to Elgin where they lost by a score of 193 to 182.

The next day the stickmen were defeated by Barrington in a game played at Lake Park. The final score was 199 to 179.

The Warriors lost again on Thursday, April 14, to Downers Grove by a score of 356 to 334.

Our next two meets are against Deerfield on April 26 at Lake Park and Niles North on April 28 away. Both teams were strong last year and will be tough opponents.

The frosh‑soph team also has a 1‑3 record. Their only win was against Elgin.
