Five‑foot one inch, greeneyed, blonde‑haired Barb Lonchar, commonly referred to as "Lonch," is this year's Westerner co‑managing editor. This active girl finds spare time hard to come by, but what she does have she says she spends going out. "I'm never home when I have spare time." She is also in Girls' Business Club and Quill and Scroll.
Barb laughingly related her hobbies as being "Boys, that's my hobby. And going to the beach, and parties." Outside of school, Barb heads for Great Lakes, Illinois, and goes to church on Sunday.
Next year Barb plans to attend Bradley University at Peoria. She will major in journalism and minor in English. Following up her college years, she stated that she'd like to be employed by a newspaper, "a type of Lois Lane."
Her subjects for this year are English IVW, democracy, government, modern history, law, and chemistry. She enjoys her gym class quite a bit. "Once you're a senior, the teachers sort of give up on keeping you in line.' Out of all four years Barb has enjoyed law class the most. "Mr. Drain is really nice. We learn and work a lot, but we have a real panic."
Barb advises students not to take chemistry. She then added, "Don't do what you're supposed to do, but do it anyway."
In Barb's opinion the best and most important thing about Maine is "the academic standing. It's a typical answer but it's the truth. After graduating from Maine you have a better chance for college. You have to work hard here."
Of her funniest and most embarrassing incidents, Barb recalls one in particular. She was walking and all dressed up. She suddenly slipped and fell into a puddle. "1 felt so lady‑like, sitting there in my puddle." Her escort found the situation quite humorous.
Barb finds one outstanding feature of West which she dislikes. "The bookstore clock. I hate that thing." To improve Maine she would "replace the clock, put coke machines in the cafeteria, and bring back the once‑known honor study." She would also add our own field house so that "We could graduate from West."
Barb's favorite state is Florida because "It's warm and the guys there are really hunks and are so cool!" Her favorite cities are Chicago for living and Miami for vacationing. She loves to travel. Last summer she went to the New York World's Fair, Jamaica, and Miami. This summer she plans to return to Miami "the Monday after graduation."
She has visited New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and Jamaica.
Barb's pet peeves are "people who lie, people who think they are better than others, and people who are late when they are supposed to pick me up."

Would you believe Christine Birchfield, this week's personality, is a busy person? You'd better. Chris, a 5' 2", brownhaired, hazel‑eyed senior, has so many activities that when asked what she does in her spare time, her retort was "What spare time?"
Besides belonging to Quill and Scroll, Choraliers, A Capella Choir, Westerner staff, and working at Howard Johnson's, Chris is president of Sigma Chi Sigma, in Teen Club, and up for election for Tri‑M. She dances, sews, knits, plays piano, sings, writes poetry, and cooks! She saves what little time she has left after all this for homework and a "certain someone."
Chris's subjects are Harmony I, drama, A Capella, and government; but her favorite subject by far is second period study hall. She plans to go to the University of Illinois. Chris thinks the most important thing about Maine West is "academics. I have to say that. We are rated so high nationally. I'm not looking for brownie points, but we do have good teachers. The students at Maine are great. They'd do anything for a friend."
Chris, whose nicknames range from "C.B." to "Birch" to "Hey, Stupid" to "You Dumbdumb," says her advice to students is "Don't get too involved with too many activities. You get run down!" To improve Maine, Chris would start with "little things, like heat in the winter!"
Her most embarrassing moment occurred when she was running for Student Council last year and someone flushed her purse down the toilet. As a freshman, she dropped a book on her finger and broke it.
"Birch's" favorite sayings are "neaty‑cool" and "whippy‑dooo." According to Chris, her bad habits are "I talk too much and people say I'm too naive."

Brown‑haired and blue‑eyed Linda Waters finds that keeping occupied during her spare time is no problem. What is her solution? "I don't have any spare time. It's as simple as that."
However, Linda does find time for her hobby which is swimming. She belongs to Aquiana and served as its senior representative this past year.
Linda's other activities include Russian Club, four years of Class Council, A Capeila choir, Tri‑M, Quill and Scroll, Legend staff, church choir, and officer in her church's youth group.
Linda's most embarrassing moment occurred during the V‑show. She had made a birthday cake for Terry Ritter and had been very careful with it so it wouldn't be spoiled. However, when she presented the cake to Terry, she dropped it on the floor. "It was embarrassing," Linda revealed.
Although she doesn't have any pet peeves, Linda feels that there is too much red tape at Maine West. "You have to go through too many stages to get anything done." The thing that she likes most about Maine is the variety of activities that it offers. Her only improvement would be "to give the students more responsibilities."
Linda had this to offer as advice to the students: "Make the most of your opportunities." She feels that the most important thing that she has learned during her four years at Maine is "how to organize my time."
Texas rates as Linda's favorite state. She goes there every year. Linda said that she usually goes to summer school during the summer. However, this summer she intends to spend her time working.
This year Linda is taking Russian IV, English AP, speech, and modern history. When she graduates, Linda will attend the University of Illinois.
