Racketmen Win Two

Gus Herrero, Maine West's foreign exchange student, is competing in the State Tennis Meet at the University of Illinois today and tomorrow. In order for a tennis player to go downstate, he must have taken a first or second in his own district.

Since there are 16 districts for varsity tennis in the state of Illinois, there will be 32 competitors for the State title. Gus Herrero stands a good chance this weekend of either taking first or placing very high, after his easy District win.

The varsity racketmen defeated Barrington and Wheeling 5‑0 last week under the direction of Coach Roger King, varsity tennis coach.

In play with Barrington on May 9, the Warriors won all three of the singles events and both doubles events. Gus Herrero, Dennis Doyle, and John Stone won each of their singles matches.

Barrington also lost to the doubles team of Tom Martin and Ed Challberg and the second doubles team of Hank Blau and Don Clark.

The varsity racketmen hosted Wheeling on Tuesday, May 10, when the team again won, 5‑0.

Dennis Doyle, John Stone, and Larry Scully were the singles players; and each of them defeated his opponent.

The doubles team of Tom Martin and Ed Challberg and the second team of Hank Blau and Don Clark won their matches also.
