Trackmen To Go Downstate Today

Today and tomorrow the State Track and Field Meet will be held at Champaign-Urbana. This year the Maine West track team will be represented by seniors Kevin Flurkey and Phil Martin, junior Ed Lusk, and sophomore Lee LaBadie.

Last Saturday the Maine West trackmen placed second in the District Meet with a total of 231/2 points. Palatine won the meet with 46 points. Last year Maine West won the meet and Palatine placed second.

In the 880‑yard run, which has been a strong event for the Warriors, Kevin Flurkey captured first place with a time of 1:55.1, which also broke the school record of Lloyd Schiegel. Flurkey's time is also high on the State records this year. The coming trip will be Flurkey's second track trip to Champaign. Ed Lusk placed fifth in the 880‑yard run with a time of 1:57.57.

In another strong event, the mile run, Lee LaBadie ran 4:20 to capture first. Phil Martin placed second with a time of 4:22.9. LaBadie's time is the best in the State this year, and Martin's ranks with the top five in the State.

Others placing in the District, but not qualifying for the State Meet, were Vern Ray, who placed fourth in the 220‑yard dash and fifth in the 100‑yard dash; Bob Rosedale, who missed going downstate as he placed third in the broad jump with a leap of 21 feet 3 inches; and Dick Wells, who tied for a fifth place in the high jump.

In the Maine East Relay the varsity trackmen placed fifth. The only MW first was in the distance medley team of Tom Postema, Kevin Flurkey, Phil Martin, and Lee LaBadie.

The two‑mile relay team of Phil Martin, Ed Lusk, Lee LaBadie, and Kevin Flurkey was outrun by New Trier and placed second.

Two fourth places were captured by the high‑hurdle shuttle relay team of Steve Hall, Terry Hammer, Bob Richter, and Wally Tistle, and the sprint medley team of Tom Postema, Vern Ray, Bob Rosedale, and Ed Lusk.
