Warrior of the West

The Warrior of the West this week is 6' 2", 160 pound LeRoy Peterson, who has brown hair and eyes and is a high jumper on the track team.

In his four years at Maine West LeRoy has been active in sports. He participated in cross country and swimming in his freshman year, swimming in his sophomore year, and track in his junior and senior years..

Track is LeRoy's favorite sport, and he has lettered in indoor track once.

From participation in athletics LeRoy has learned sportsmanship and how to get along in a group. He said, "You really find out about teamwork; you don't realize what it is until you've participated in athletics.''

LeRoy stated that the hardest part about training for track is getting in shape and staying there. He said that high jumping involves a lot of leg work. "Be prepared to work hard because it takes hard work to excel in sports: also do what the coach tells you," is LeRoy advice for boys going out for athletics.

As for his most exciting meet, LeRoy said that it was during the indoor track season in the meet against Prospect when he jumped six feet. He said that he jumped to that height again during the Waukegan meet.

To improve Maine West, LeRoy said that the school should get the students aware of minor sports. He feels that the students have less school spirit. He said that even the basketball games had poor school spirit this year. He added that the only events attended well are those where the teams are always winning.

LeRoy revealed that his pet peeve is the kids not coming out and supporting the teams. He stated, "It really lets the team down."

LeRoy feels that the most outstanding thing about Maine West is the coaches. He said that they're really great.

One of the funniest incidents of LeRoy's life happened when he was a lifeguard. He was walking along the edge of the pool yelling at some kids, and all of a sudden he fell in the water.

In the future LeRoy is looking forward to going to North Woods Institute in Midland, Michigan. After college he tentatively plans to work for General Motors.
