Sandy ranks 24 in the senior class of 590 at Maine West and was a semi‑finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. Her school activities include: GAA, National Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, senior leader, and library assistant.
In applying for this grant, she sent a letter to the Soroptimist Club scholarship committee telling why she had chosen to go on to college. In this, Sandy stated: "I like people; I like to watch them and wonder what they are thinking about and why they act the way they do.
"I guess most of all I like little children. The attitudes they develop when they are young will be a basis for their whole lives. This is why I want to be a teacher.
