The Maine West varsity tennis team won the Conference championship at Rand Park on Saturday, May 29. The racketmen outdid Wheeling, Conant, Prospect, Forest View, and Palatine. Maine West tied Forest View for the Conference meet, but won the Conference championship by seven points.
Maine West has had an excellent season record, winning 14 of the 15 meets played. The only team that overpowered the Warriors was Niles East. In this meet Gus Herrero lost his only match with the Westmen, losing to Mark Bishop. Gus Herrero took third place in the State tennis meet at the University of Illinois at Champaign‑Urbana, while competing against 32 other competitors from the state of Illinois.

In the Conference meet, the Warriors edged Forest View 3‑2, after defeating Wheeling, Conant, Prospect, and Palatine.
Gus Herreco won his match, the first singles event. Ed Challberg, a newcomer to singles play, lost his match in the first round. Third singles event had John Stone defeat his opponent.
In the doubles events, Tom Martin and Dennis Doyle won the first for Maine West. The second doubles team of Larry Scully and Don Clark lost in the second round of play.
