Editorials 'Honesty Is the Best Policy'

Did you know that honesty used to mean chastity? Nowadays honesty is truthfulness, integrity. Ah‑ha, all you stalwarts! There! Your posture straightens; a gleam comes into your eye. And now you say: "You're writing about how we should be honest! Ya' ain't got me, babe! I . . . (repeat) I am honest!" And so, what else in new?

When was the last time you swiped an ashtray from a restaurant (trite, but true!)?? When was the last time one of us honest bards evaded answering a question because we would either get in trouble or lie? We're all guilty!!!

Some of us, however, get carried away. Perhaps, that explains missing folders, books, etc. Of course, those same some only "borrowed the things" (note raised eyebrows?) How would you like someone to walk off with one of YOUR favorite possessions‑not so good, huh? Not so good. So three cheers go for the rat that returns the cheese!

How many of us evade answering questions or he to save a friend? How many of us don't squeal when we know that a good buddy of ours is cheating? People, we are doing our friends no favors by saving their necks. Sure you can rationalize! Sure . . . you can count on that old "loyalty" bit. But consider two things. How "loyal" are you being? You may grow to hate (loath, despise) that certain good buddy, pal, "friend" that you have to lie for.

What to do? Simple, be honest! How? Think twice (maybe four or six times) before doing "evil." Why? Well, it's a great feeling to know that you‑we have conquered "temptation." Also, it kind of rests easy on the heart!

Enough said! In all seriousness, though, we should try to be honest. Praise goes to the valiant soul who attempts this gracious virtue. Besides it's such a nice habit.
