"Everyone should have a goal and work for it," is the advice of Mark Burchard, hazel‑eyed, brown‑haired senior.
Mark, or "Kraut" as he is sometimes called, just finished playing Newton Fuller, one of the leads in the Senior Class play, George Washington Slept Here. He has also been in the Footlighters' productions of Ask Any Girl and Our Hearts Were Young and Gay.
Besides working at Stephany Studios, Mark keeps himself busy by teaching himself to play the piano. He also finds time to be in Thespian Society.
In Mark's eyes, the faculty and the music department are the best things at Maine, but he would like to see Maine get a fieldhouse and a more adequate auditorium. He thinks the most important thing at Maine is the wide choice of subjects.
This year Mark is taking harmony, earth science, A Cappella choir, English IV W, drama, and government. He enjoys all of his classes, especially drama.
Mark's pet peeve is "people who aren't friendly."
His funniest incident occurred Thursday evening before the opening of the Senior Class play. He felt nauseated and ran into a girls' washroom; as a result, the washroom was closed for the remainder of the evening.
His most embarrassing moment came when he was walking down the hail and part of his spiral notebook caught onto a girl's sweater as she passed him. Unaware of this and with quite a few teachers watching, Mark kept on walking while the girl ran after him calling him a thief.
During the summer, Mark spent two weeks at a music camp on a scholarship he won from the Music Boosters. He also spent the summer touring San Bernadino, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Yuma, Arizona. He stopped briefly in Phoenix and Mexico. Thinking back, Mark claims that Las Vegas is his favorite city.
Mark plans to attend either the American Conservatory or the Art Institute of Chicago where he will major in drama and music.

One of the most outgoing students here at Maine West for the last four years has been perky Harriet Hall. Harriett is a 5 foot blonde with bluish‑green eyes, and she wears a smile all the time.
"Come out for V‑Show. The student body makes the show professional," says Harriet. This year Harriet is especially interested in V‑Show, because she is the director. Also, this production is vital to Student Council. Harriet commented that it is hard work and takes a lot of effort, but it is very rewarding.
During the past four years, V‑Show has not been Harriet's only interest. She has been on Student Council for four years and was a cheerleader her sophomore and junior years. Harriet was vice‑president of her freshman class, secretary of her sophomore class, and president of her junior lass.
Harriet's other achievements are membership in Brotherhood Society, and Thespian Society, and she is a senior leader. She was on Christmas Formal Court her sophomore year, and this year she was a member of the Homecoming court.
Some of Harriet's greatest opportunities have been in acting. She participated in V‑Show all four years here at Maine, and last year she had a lead role in South Pacific. This year Harriet performed as Annabelle in the Senior Class play, George Washington Slept Here.
Harriet believes, "One of the most rewarding things in life is getting up in front of an audience and having them like you." She enjoys drama very much and does her best when performing. She believes our school spirit has its ups and downs, and is improving.
Harriet also enjoys playing the guitar at home and is fascinated by the "spirit world," in which she is a firm believer. She spends a lot of her time reading about black magic and witchcraft.
After graduation Harriet pans to attend either Northwestern University or Illinois Wesleyan; there she wants to major in dramatic art. If she does well in it, she would like to make it her profession.
