Wrestling
"We have a lot of good boys this, year, but hard work will make the team," says Coach Richard Carlini of the up‑coming '65‑'66 wrestling team. Prospect, Palatine, and Forest View will be among the toughest opponents the grapplers will face. The wrestling season will open on November 20, when they face Barrington in A‑wing gym at two o'clock.
November 8 marks the first day of practice. For anyone who is interested in coming out for the squad, Coach Carlini replied, "The team's prospects are good this year, but all positions are wide open." The heavyweight and 180 lbs. divisions will be especially lacking in experience.
Returning lettermen this season will be Tom, Mordue '66, Ron Ploshay '66, Steve Ryden '66, Tom Hansch '66, Frank Bautisa '66, and Wayne Rozanski '66. Tom Mordue was the most valuable wrestler and placed fifth in state last year.
Coach Carlini expects a lot, from the junior boys. 'They have a lot of good boys, if they only will come out." Permission forms and physical examination forms can be obtained in B-104 before or after school.
Gymnastics
The varsity gymnasts face a rebuilding year after losing eight varsity seniors last year, according to varsity gymnastic Coach, Sid Drain. The frosh‑soph squad, under Coach Roger King's direction, along with the varsity team will face five conference meets and eleven regular meets.
Opponents Maine West will face in Conference include Prospect, Conant, Forest View, Palatine, and Wheeling.
Jim Nerius, Ray Mandel, and Dennis Zick are the tumblers who earned their varsity letters last year. Other returning lettermen are Larry Janssens on the trampoline and Bob Dettmer on the side horse.
Among the most promising members of the team this season are Larry Scully, Howard Tyler, Don Kennett, Ron Sass, and Jay Carley. These gymnasts in addition to others will make up the eighteen members of the varsity squad.
Both Coach Drain and Coach King have been guiding the gymnastics teams in the past years at Maine West. They believe the toughest team in the conference will be the Prospect Knights.

Six wins and one loss to Prospect was the Conference record of last year's varsity gymnasts, while the overall record was, seven wins, one tie, and seven losses.
The frosh‑soph squad will compete along with the varsity in all but one of the sixteen meets. A new school, New Trier West, will have only a frosh‑soph squad with which they will compete.
Maine West's other opponents during the coming season are Evanston, Proviso West, West Leyden, Maine South, Oak Park, Niles North, Waukegan, Glen. brook South, Wheaton, Glenbrook North, and frosh‑sophs of New Trier West.
Swimming
"I hope the juniors can come through and be back for a good year next season," replied Coach Harold Baer of the varsity swim team. "This will be an inexperienced year ‑ a challenge for the junior swimmers," the coach continued.
Tom Wenzel '67, Norm Hudson '67, Bob McGee '66, and Gregory Gundling '66 are the only returning lettermen for this season. Jim Wandrey '66 was a promising swimmer for this year, but he moved away during the summer. Coach Baer believes that the most promising swimmers will be the returning lettermen.
The swimming conference will be made up of two leagues this year: the Mid‑Suburban and the Central Suburban. This is because only a few schools in the Mid‑Suburban Conference have swimming pools and there would be little competition. The members of the Central Suburban League are Deerfield, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Niles West, Niles North, New Trier West (for Frosh‑Soph only), and Maine South. Forest View, Prospect, Wheeling, Elk Grove (for Frosh‑Soph only), and Maine West are members of the Mid‑Suburban Conference.
Swimmers of the varsity swim team will be Gary Robbins '66, Ron Wallace '66, Jeff Pick '66, Marc Bonnivier '67, Keith Gyssler '67, Tab Fulle '67, Jim McNurney '67, Dave Eley '67, Rainer Paasch '67, and Dave Klamer '67.
A good prospect for varsity swim team is freshman swimmer Chris Olander '69.
Practice for the swim team will begin on November 8 in the pool. Maine West will host the first swim meet of the season on November 24. The tankers will take on the swimmers from Proviso West.
