West Matmen Challenge South
Wrestlers Tonight

Tonight the Maine West grappiers take on the Maine South wrestlers in A‑wing gym at 7:30. Tomorrow the grapplers travel to West Leyden for a quadrangular meet which includes Maine West, Niles West, West Leyden, and Deerfield.

The varsity grapplers beat the Glenbrook North Spartans 24‑21 to even up their season record to one win and one loss. This was another non‑conference meet for the matmen.

The meet started off with the grapplers behind as Dave Grutzius, at 95 pounds, and Kurt Christensen, at 103 pounds, lost. Tom Curtin, 112 pounds, lost a tough match by a score of 4‑3, and Ron Ploshay defeated his opponent 5‑0 and brought the meet into a tie. Wayne Rozanski, 127 pounds, put the grapplers out in front as he decisioned his opponent. Junior Greg Dolphin, 133 pounds, tied his Glenbrook opponent 2‑2. Dolphin's opponent happened to be the Spartan's number one wrestler.

Tom Hansch, who had the Glenbrook 138 pounder on his back in the first period, lost by default because the Glenbrook wrestler was injured after the first period and was unable to continue the match. Frank Bautista wrestled an exciting match as he pinned his opponent in the third period to have the grapplers take the lead 16‑13. Steve Ryden, 154 pounds and one of the most exciting wrestlers to watch, won by a decision.

The 165 pound grappler, Jim Kautz, pinned the Spartan wrestler in the second period. This turned out to be the deciding factor of the meet and put the matmen out in front 24 to 13. Mike Schuepper, 180 pounds, lost to his Glenbrook opponent. The meet then ended when Lee Yates became pinned by the Glenbrook heavyweight.

The varsity grapplers lost their first meet of the year to the Barrington Broncos by a score of 25 to 17. The grapplers had three sophomores wrestling in the first three weight classes; all were in their first varsity matches.

Dave Grutzius and Kurt Christensen both lost on decisions at 95 pounds and 103 pounds, respectively. Louis Volberding, 112 pounds, was pinned; and Ron Ploshay, at 120 pounds, also lost by a decision. Greg Dolphin, 127 pounds, was the first Warrior to be victorious as he defeated his opponent 5-2. Wayne Rozanski, 133 pounds, followed Dolphin, and he won on a decision.

Tom Hansch, 138 pounds, drove the crowd to their feet as he pinned the Barrington opponent in only one minute and 15 seconds of the first period. Frank Bautista, 145 pounds, and Steve Ryden both won on decisions to tie the score. Jim Kautz and Mike Schuepper each lost to their opponents on decisions. At heavyweight, Royce Leonardson was pinned by the enormous Barrington heavy weight.

The sophomore wrestlers won both of their meets this season. Some of the boys that have been doing a fine job are freshman Gary Curtin‑who at 95 pounds has pinned both of his opponents‑Ken Werner, Tom Helms, and Geoff Sorensen. The last three defeated all of their opponents in the first two matches.
