The Maine West varsity grapplers took second place in a Quadrangular meet at West Leyden on Saturday, December 11. The competing teams were West Leyden, the first place team, Maine West, Deerfield, and Niles West.
Dave Grutzius, Maine's 95 pound sophomore, took third place. Kurt Christensen, 103 pounds, also took third. Tom Mordue, who this year wrestles at 112, took fourth place. Ron Ploshay, 120 pounds, captured third place for Maine in his division. Wayne Rozanski took a first place in the 127 pound weight class.
Ralph Gano, wrestling 133, lost all his matches. T o m Hansch grabbed first place in the 138 pound class. Ken Werner wrestled at 145 pounds and took fourth. Maine's 154 pounder, Steve Ryden, grabbed another first for the Warriors as did Jim Kautz, 165 pounds.
Mike Schupfer defeated two of his opponents to take second place in the 180 pound division. Royce Leonardson wrestled heavyweight for our grapplers and took a fourth.
Saturday morning, Maine's sophomore team wrestled Elk Grove and won by the score of 30‑18. Gary Curtin, wrestling in the 95 pound slot, managed to pin his opponent in the first 24 seconds of the match.

Maine's 103 pound Kevin Postema decisioned his opponent his opponent, while Tom Helmo, 127 pounds, lost his first match of the season on a close decision.
On Friday, December 10, the varsity grapplers smeared Maine South 32‑11. Dave Grutzius, 95 pounds, started off the meet by fighting his opponent to a tie. Wrestling at 102 was Kurt Christensen who pinned his opponent. Tom Mordue, wrestling at 112, won his match on a decision. Ron Ploshay, wrestling 120, defeated his opponent by pinning him. At 127 pounds, Wayne Rozanski also won ‑ this time on a decision.
Ralph Gano, who wrestled in the 133 pound weight class, also won on a decision. T 0 m Hensch pinned his 138 pound man. At 145 was Scott Gilmore, who lost on a decision. Steve Ryden wrestled in the 154 pound weight class, and he won on a decision. At 180 was Mike Shupfer who lost a decision. Wrestling heavyweight for the grapplers was Lee Yates who also lost on a decision.
The grapplers next meet is at Lake Park, a Quadrangular meet involving Lake Park, Maine West, Arlington, and Glenbard East, on December 30 from 1 to 3 p.m.
