Lynne Struebing '66 and Bob Burgess '66 are the local winners of the Youth Leadership Contest sponsored by The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The contest was held the week of December 15 and was open to anyone who was interested and qualified to enter.
Students filled out applications and were judged in five categories: leadership (initiative, organization ability and influence on others), citizenship appreciation (interest and concern with cherished privileges, and participation in community and American programs), perseverance, resourcefulness, sense of honor, arrangement and neatness of brochure, and compliance with the instructions of the contest.
The Youth Leadership Contest is not a scholarship contest. The reward for the local winners was $100 bond. Lynne and Bob will go on to the District finals. A boy and girl will be chosen to go on to the State and ultimately to National competition at the finals.

of Maine West. They are Lynne Struebing, '66. Seniors nominated three boys and three girls to be later voted upon by the faculty. The nominees were Nancy Carlson, Linda Olson, Lynne Struebing, Larry Hofmann, Bob Burgess, and Pete Kulik.
Bob and Lynne will each receive a pin and a certificate of merit to be awarded at the Honors Assembly in June. A dinner will be held at a place in downtown Chicago for all winning students in this area. Though Bob has gone as far as he can, Lynne is eligible to enter the statewide and nationwide competition. A $75 scholarship and a $100 bond would be awarded to Lynne if she were to win the state competition.
The bases for nomination were dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The DAR and SAR are patriotic organizations concerned primarily with the promotion of good citizenship.
Since 1960 the awards have been presented at Maine West. The system is now headed by Miss Mae Jean Engen, Dean of Girls. Of the winners, Miss Engen states, "It is an honor for these students to be selected to represent Maine West."
