Way for Credit

French Abroad Offers

"French Abroad" will again be offered to all interested and qualified students from the Maine Township High Schools. Students who have completed at least one year of French at the time of departure will be eligible. One full language credit will be given for this eight week summer school course upon completion of studies at Quimper in Brittany.

Attendance at a two‑week orientation course held at Maine will be required. The students will then fly to London for four days of sightseeing, chaperoned by Mr. Paul Griffith, Maine South and Mrs. Ethel Simons, Maine East. They will then cross the Channel by ferry, landing at Quimper in southeastern Brittany.

During the morning's classes language and civilization will be taught by professors from the University of Rennes. The afternoons will be devoted to organized sports, social activities, and the various excursions which have already been planned by the sponsors. The Maine students will stay in the dormitories of a newly‑constructed lycee along with a number of students from other countries.

The city of Quimper, which boasts a population of 24,000 inhabitants, is a departmental capital and reknown family vacation center, located in a pretty valley at the junction of the Steir and Odet Rivers. Holidays in Quimper are still rich in tradition and the Maine students will be invited to attend the celebrations of Bastille Day, July 14, and the Grand Fete de Cornouaille, July 24.

A short boat ride down the Odet River opens up the Atlantic Ocean to the residents of Quimper. The students will have an opportunity to see the pride of Quimper, its Gothic Cathedral. The cathedral dates from the thirteenth century and is surrounded by "picturesque old quarters with winding cobblestone streets and quaint high gabled houses."

At the end of the studies at Quimper the group will travel to Paris for a six‑day visit to the capital and from there, will fly directly to O'Hare Airport.
