Band To Feature Stimulating Music

"76 trombones led the big parade, with 110 cornets . . . The Band department of Maine West does not have 76 trombones or 110 comets, but it does have the spark and the vitality needed for a band to be successful.

The Concert Band and the combined Cadet and Intermediate Bands will present a band concert on Sunday afternoon, February 20, at 3 p.m. in Maine West's auditorium. The general admission fee is $1 for adults and $.75 for children. Music Booster tickets and faculty passes will be honored.

Concert Band will present "Suite in E Flat" by Gustav Holst; "Randango"; a medley of Henry Mancini numbers including "Elephant Walk," "Hatan," and "Moon River"; and "March‑Ipus 99," composed by Serge Prokofieff and arranged by Paul Yoder.

The flute section of Concert Band will be featured in a solo, "The Flea." Members of the flute section are Kathy Barry '66, Delores Berndt '67, Wendy Geertz '66, Donna Hostetler '66, Nancy Lilja '69, Kathy Malten '68, Beth Radcliffe '66, Sue Turner '67, and Jean Williams '67.

Barb Matula '66, solo twirler, will be featured in a dazzling baton demonstration.

The Band department at Maine is a service organization. During the year the bands play at various activities such as: pep assemblies, football and basketball games, dedication ceremonies, and V‑Show.

Intermediate Band is composed of fifty musicians. This band is a pre‑requisite course for all other band activities at Maine. The students are required to pass regular playing and written tests. The training received in Intermediate Band provides the necessary background for admittance into Concert Band.

Cadet Band, or the junior varsity band of the Music Department, is the next step up the ladder. Replacements for Concert Band are taken from Cadet Band.

Throughout the years the bands from Maine West have proven to be championship bands. In 1963 Maine West boasted having the state championship band. The band has always received a first place rating in the Illinois State Festival Contest. Other awards include fourth place in the national competition at Milwaukee, finalist in the Stage‑Band Festival in Oak Lawn, and a trophy for outstanding performance at Mount Prospect. Lastly, the Maine West Band has received a 95 per cent rating or better for the past five years at Riverview.

Mr. Michael Cuthbert will conduct the combined Cadet and Intermediate Bands. Mr. Cuthbert comes from a long line of musicians. He plays the trumpet, and he is currently performing with the Wilmette Community Band.

Mr. Robert Kuite, chairman of the Music Department, will conduct the Concert Band. For fifteen years he has directed championship bands. During these years he has received 15 first places and three state championships.
