"Hand in Hand with Brotherhood" is the theme for this year's Brotherhood Week. Beginning on February 19 and continuing through February 25, this week will be highlighted by the annual assembly to be held on Friday of that week.
NEW MEMBERS
Each class will select three girls and three boys whom they feel are qualified to become new members of the society. Students are to be chosen for their display of friendliness, spirit, poise, and leadership. Votes will be cast several days before the assembly where the winners will be announced. The purpose of this voting, which is to be done in the homerooms, is to promote brotherhood throughout Maine West. As Nancy Carlson, vice‑president of the society said, "The Brotherhood Society needs people who have a real interest in other people. They are not to be chosen for their popularity."
Mr. Paul McKinnis, guidance counselor and experienced speaker, will be talking on "The Spirit of Brotherhood" for the main portion of the program.
The society is sponsored by Mr. A. K. H. Cochrane, dean of students; and its officers are Jay Cane, president; Nancy Carlson, vice-president; Sheila Quinn, secretary-treasurer. Next week one of these officers

will speak to each class during its regular morning guidance assembly, about the voting and selecting of Brotherhood Society nominees.
RESPONSIBLE VOTING
It is up to each student to make this society succeed, note present members. A misconception is that this is just a chance for the "popular" students to make known their popularity.
Rather, it is an opportunity for the deserving people to be noted. Voting should be taken seriously, and some thought should go into each choice.
Mr. A. K. H. Cochrane, when asked to express his views on the purpose of Brotherhood Society, said, "Brotherhood Society is composed of students who have shown honesty, fellowship, and sportsmanship in their everyday lives. With Brotherhood Week a short time away, all students should think of persons at Maine West who meet the standards of honesty, fellowship, and sportsmanship. When students vote, they should make a good choice." He added, "All students should do their best to live up to the standards that Brotherhood Society has set."
