Students Train for Future Jobs

"I believe that cooperative education is ideally suited for those students who know definitely that they are not going on to college. It affords a student an opportunity to sample occupations with the possibility of stepping into a specific vocation upon graduation," commented Mr. Rolland Wolfe, coordinator of the Diversified, Occupations Program.

Diversified Occupations, one of the cooperative education programs at Maine West, gives many students the chance to experience the vocational responsibilities they will meet after graduation. Although several of these students will go on to college after graduation, most will enter directly into a job or a vocational school.

Larry Soldana '66, president; Ken Cannata '66, vice‑president; Guy Polito '66, treasurer; Becky Dennis '66, historian; and Pauline Ladas '66, secretary, head the executive committee of the Diversified Occupations Club. Other club committees include publicity, projects and finance, and program and entertainment.

While working during school hours, the D.O. class members gain two credits ‑ one for on-the‑job training and one for class work where students work on training materials. A very important part of this program is attitude ‑ the attitude of the student toward his or her employer, school, and community.

Students are placed in many and varied occupations on the Diversified Occupations program. For example, Becky Dennis '66, Pauline Ladas '66, Sandy Berberich '66, Carol Nabazas '66, and Candy Hillyer '67 are apprentice beauticians; Matt Erschen '66 is an electronics fabricator; the photography field is represented by Ella Muschkat '67 and Don Lucas '66; Leonard Giese '66 is a draftsman; Ken Cannata '66 and Robin Keiser '66 are printers; Nancy Eiter '66 works as a dental assistant; Larry Soldana '66 and Don Walters '66 are mechanics; Guy Polito '66 works as a florist; Peggy Weber '67 works on display; Paul Tousignant '67 is a carpenter; and Jan Shreve '66 is a librarian's assistant.
