Sixty‑one Maine West students qualified for a national mathematics test to be given all over the country on March 10. The preliminary test was given in all the advanced math classes.
The final test will be given during the first two school periods in R‑104. Two "cram" or "help" sessions have already been held on February 15 and 22, and one more will be held March 8 for any semi‑finalists wishing to attend.
The test covers freshman algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra. "Theoretically," said Mr. David Henry, head of the math contest here at Maine, "any student who has covered these courses should be able to pass the test‑theoretically, that is. But the test is very, very difficult." While a perfect score is 150, the average score last year was 40 points. The test differs somewhat each year; and copies and solutions to the 1962, '63, and '64 tests are available.
Last year Maine West took second place as a team, and Mike Amling '65 was the individual state winner with a score of 117. The team score is the average of the school's three highest scores. The highest scorer in each school receives a pin, and the first five schools receive a plaque.
