The ten Homecoming Queen candidates have been chosen, and now the students must pick the one who will reign as this year's queen.
Pam Fisher has been busy with Pep Club, Girls' Club, Girls' Business Club, Student Council, and Class Council during her past three years here at Maine West. After being notified that she was one of the winners, she said, "It really didn't seem possible. It felt like a dream. Then I wanted to tell everybody in the world, but I was sitting at home alone." She went on to say that if she were chosen queen, she would probably react like any average girl ‑ "I'd start crying and go into hysteria and run around the field two or three times."
Jan Grubert said that after she learned she was a finalist, "I wanted to hug somebody, but the proper people weren't around, so I restrained myself." In her opinion, "A Homecoming Queen should have a well-developed personality and charm. In addition she should be neat in appearance, good looking, have a lot of school spirit, and most important of all, should be a person that the students want to call their friend." Jan is on Pom-Pon Squad, the Westerner, and V-show staff, and in the Quill and Scroll Society.
Nancy Gunn was sick and at home in her pajamas when she heard the "fabulous" news. She is a cheerleader, president of Pep Club, a member of Brotherhood Society, and also participates in Student Council and Class Council. "A pleasant personality, sincerity, cuteness, and the ability to represent a great school like Maine" are the qualities upon which Nancy feels a Homecoming Queen should be judged. If she were to win, she said it would be "the greatest thing that could ever happen."
Mary Holm, secretary of Student Council and a member of Brotherhood Society, just couldn't believe that she had made the Homecoming Queen finals. It is her opinion that "The queen should be a girl who will really represent Maine West. She should care about studies and her school and have a purpose in life." If someone were to tell her that she had won, she would say, "You must be joking!"
Katie Levan is another girl who may become queen. When she learned of this possibility, she said that she was "so excited that I couldn't even go to sleep that night." To her "A Homecoming Queen does not necessarily need to be beautiful. She must be a good representative of her school in character, spirit, and responsibility to her classmates." Katie's activities include Pom‑Pon Squad, Brotherhood Society, Student Council, and Class Council.

"I was so surprised and happy!" was the only way that Sheila Quinn could describe her reaction to the news that she had been chosen as one of the ten finalists. She feels that "looks, personality, and friendliness" are the key points for which a queen should be selected. Pom‑Pon Squad, Student Council, Class Council, and Brotherhood Society are some of her activities. How would she react if she were chosen this year's queen? "Sheesh, I can't even imagine."
Terry Snow, who just transferred here last year, couldn't believe that she was one of the finalists. "I started to shake and almost cried." She thinks that a Homecoming Queen should "be pretty, show a lot of interest in school and the students, and be on the inside of the events around school." As to her reaction if she were chosen, she said, "That would be wonderful, and I would be very proud."
Sue Stein feels that the queen should be judged on her personality and congeniality. "She should he the out-going, bubbly girl as opposed to the beautiful, quiet one." If Sue does become queen, she said she'd be "honored and shocked, but right now I'm very happy and excited about Homecoming." Among her activities are Student Council, Class Council, and Brotherhood Society.
Linda Wilkins is the secretary of Girls' Club Council and has participated in Class Council. She said that she was "completely shocked" when she learned she had been chosen as one of the finalists, and she "still can't believe it." She went on to say, "Being chosen queen is really a great honor. I never thought I would get this far! But if I were chosen queen, I would always try to represent Maine well, and I would always respect this honor."
Susie Ziehn, who tries not to count on things so that she will not be let down, looks upon her nomination as "a real honor." She believes that a Homecoming Queen should be judged, "not so much on how pretty she is on the outside, but how pretty she is on the inside. She should be a person who is nice to be with and just plain nice in every way. If I were to win, I would really be honored that my friends thought I deserved this." Susie is on Student Council, Class Council, and the secretary‑treasurer of Brotherhood Society.
