Turkish Student Begins Year At Maine

Brown eyes and hair and look at our newspaper and year"one meter 69 centimeters tall" describes Sukru Gurel, Maine West's AFS student for the '66‑'67 school year.

"Suk," as he is sometimes called by his friends, thinks that the best thing about Maine is that it's co‑ed. He has always attended boys' schools in the past. "Maine is great. The students are very friendly to me," Sukru says. "It really impressed me."

During his spare time Sukru likes to play volleyball, write poetry, and play the mandolin. He also played soccer back home in Turkey. He said he would like to help organize a soccer team here at Maine West. Sukru also has quite an academic load. He is taking physics, English III, college trigonometry, government, U.S. history, and gym. He is also a member of Student Council.

Our AFS student has traveled to the central part of Turkey. His home town is near the Aegean Sea, and it has a population of about 30,000. Besides Turkish, Sukru has studied French.

Dislikes? Only one. Five minutes is not enough time for him to get from class to class. He says that he would like to improve Maine by lengthening the passing periods.

As for future plans, Sukru intends to attend the University of Ankara and major in political science.
