The varsity cross country team encountered tremendous success last week as they demolished two dual opponents and won the Center Meet in convincing style. The Warrior's win in the Center Meet was the third time in a row that Maine had captured this popular event which was first held at Morton in 1964. In the dual meets, the Warriors faced non‑Conference foes Maine South and Barrington and downed them decisively, 17 to 46, and 15 to 48, respectively.
The highlight of the Center Meet was Lee LaBadie's record-shattering run in the varsity "A" race of 10:16 which was a full 26 seconds under the old record of 10:42, previously held by Mike Collins of New Trier, last year's State Champ. Also running in that race for the Warriors were Doug Chase, who finished ninth, and Ed Lusk, who finished fourteenth in a field of about 150 runners. Coach Bill Barringer of the varsity Warriors stated that there were about 800 runners from the 23 participating schools in the five separate races.
Last Thursday the varsity and frosh‑soph ended their non‑Conference season with their contest against Maine South. The varsity division saw Lee LaBadie beat the rest of the field by about 200 yards with Ed Lusk finishing second and Doug Chase placing third. The first Hawk to cross the finish line was Benedict, but following him were Schlesser, Kesaris, Braun, Deuser, and Carter, all from West, which insured the Warrior victory. Sophomore Warrior Dale Dreischarf led the frosh‑soph team to victory by beating a Maine South man Strelkn, who finished second. The next ten places were all Warriors, and this show of depth gave Maine West a 19 to 44 victory.

On Tuesday the Warriors met with Barrington, and the Broncos afforded less competition than the Hawks. The varsity swept the first five places of this meet with LaBadie, Lusk, Chase, Schlesser, and Kesaris crossing the finish line before the first Barrington man. Thomas of Barrington won in the frosh‑soph race; but the next four runners, Dreisharf, Wolski, Plas, and Johnson came on strong as the little Warriors won handily, 21 to 36.
Starting Saturday, the Warriors will open their quest of the Mid‑Suburban Conference Championship with a meet against Prospect in between the varsity and junior varsity football games.
Strongest challenges for the title will come to the Warriors from Arlington, a new school in the Conference this year, and Forest View, who nosed out the Warriors for the title last year. Remaining Warrior Schedule
10/1 Prospect 12:30 away
10/4 Conant 4:30 home.
10/7 Forest View 4:30 home
10/11 Wheeling 4:30 home
