Tomorrow the Maine West football team will travel to Prospect to take on the Knights in a Conference game. The junior varsity game will start at 12 noon. The varsity game will start at 2 p.m.
On September 24 the Maine South varsity football team upset Maine West's varsity football team by a score of 28 to 21. Maine South scored the first touchdown of the game as their quarterback Bob Simpson ran the ball over from the 1‑yard line. The extra point attempt was successful. The first quarter ended with South leading 7 to 0.
In the second quarter West's fullback Dick Manny scored from the 18‑yard line on a run. Andy Sanchez converted for the point to tie the score 7 to 7. Warrior Al Fritz returned a South punt for a 70‑yard touchdown in the second quarter, but it was nullified as West was called for clipping on the play. Before the quarter ended, South scored a touchdown and made the point after to take a 14 to 7 lead at the half.
Maine South scored in the third quarter and again made the point after to take a 21 to 7 lead. South scored in the fourth quarter and made the extra point for a 28 to 7 lead.
With 2:33 left in the game Phil Murdock passed to Bruce Kaechele for a 3‑yard touchdown. Andy Sanchez's point after was again successful. West then kicked off to South, but the Hawks were forced to punt on fourth down. Ken Mandelky received the punt and brought the crowd to their feet as he returned it 65 yards to South's 30‑yard line. With 33 seconds left Al Fritz caught a 30‑yard pass from Phil Murdock for a touchdown. Andy Sanchez kicked his third extra point of the day after the touchdown to make the score South 28 and West 21. West kicked to South, but the Hawks ran out the clock and upset the Maine West Warriors.

In their first game of the year the Maine West varsity football team made the long trip to Peoria, but it was worth it as they beat the highly‑rated Peoria Central team by a score of 19 to 7.
Maine's Al Fritz returned the kickoff 5 yards to the 19‑yard line. On the first play Dick Manny ran for 3 yards and then Ken Mandelky went around end to gain 26 yards. Senior end Tom Pyron threw the key block on Mandelky's run. The Warriors got the ball to Peoria's 33‑yard line, but Central intercepted a Warrior pass.
Peoria did not move the ball and had to punt. Al Fritz returned the punt 15 yards to the Warrior's own 44‑yard line. Maine ran the ball to the 1‑yard line where Dick Manny ran the ball over for the first touchdown. The point after was unsuccessful. Maine led 6 to 0 after the first quarter.
Returning All‑Conference player Craig Rowells intercepted a Peoria pass to set up the second touchdown which came on a 15‑yard pass from Phil Murdock to Al Fritz. Andy Sanchez kicked the extra point, and the Warriors led 13 to 0 at the half.
With 1:29 left in the third quarter Ken Mandelky ran the ball 5 yards for a touchdown. The point after failed, and the third quarter ended with Maine in front 19 to 0. Peoria scored in the fourth quarter and made the extra point.
