"I like to cut down girls," says this year's first warrior, Dick Manny. This 5' 10" senior with hazel eyes and light brown hair is entering his fourth year of participation in baseball, basketball, and football. He has already earned one letter in each.
Football and basketball are his favorite sports because they have "more action, speed, and team participation than other sports.' From the combined efforts of all his sports Dick has learned a "respect for the coaches and the hard work that goes into forming a good team. Two weeks before school starts is the hardest part of training," he revealed, "because the games seem so far away and the practice seems useless."
This year Dick's courses include trigonometry, advanced placement English, economics, and geology. He hopes to attend either Miami of Ohio or Harvard next fall and plans to major in business administration. Dick will also apply for a scholarship to play in a college sport although he has not yet decided which sport it will be.
"The diversity of activities one can get involved in" is what Dick considers most outstanding about Maine West. When asked about the newly acquired lights for the football field, Dick replied, "They are a tremendous asset to the school. Greater participation in sports and a bigger turnout, hopefully caused by the lights, should improve school spirit," he continued. Dick thought that the football team "has very good potential" this year and that many interesting games are in store.
Dick is looking toward a future of traveling, especially in the United States. Asked if he had traveled much before, Dick told of this basketball experience in his sophomore year. "I made a basket for the other team, Waukegan, but fortunately it didn't count."
Dick's favorite "Big‑Time" athlete is Gene Washington of Michigan State. To keep up his studies and devote the necessary time to practice, Dick must "keep his mind on his work."
Obstinate people are his pet peeve "so I guess I hate myself," he said. If he could change, it would be to rid himself of being stubborn and obstinate.
Asked if he had any favorite foods, Dick summed up his eating habits in one sentence: "I like everything!"
