Directors Choose Cast for Musical

The speaking parts for Flower Drum Song, Maine West's musical to be presented April 20, 21, and 22, have recently been cast. Among those tentatively scheduled for the parts are Doug Bergman, Lynn Berry, Sue Buthman, Bob Connelly, Terry Davis, David Flaskamp, Chris Huestis, William Jacobs, Bill Nagel, Greg Nelson, John Powell, Andrew Sanchez, and Phil Witkay. Linda Pinzke has been chosen as student director.

"Flower Drum Song is a fun musical," explained Mr. Robert Kuite, music director. It is the story of Chinese‑Americans in San Francisco. Wang‑Ta (John Harrisville‑Dave Larson), a young Chinese‑American, falls in love with Linda Low (Cheryl Bard‑Lorrie Ware), a girl of somewhat questionable background. He asks her to marry him without telling his family, and then meets pretty Mei Li (Sue Dahm‑Cheryl Swanson) who is a friend of the family and considered a good match for him. Meanwhile, Sammy Fong (Ken Lorentz‑Richard Schellin), a night club owner, falls in love with Linda Low, but the marriage is already set.

The plot is thickened by a bratty kid brother, Helen Chao's (Judy Dadabo‑Lorraine Jensen) hopeless love, and a conflict with the "other generation." The turning point is a very tense and critical striptease scene. Throughout the musical there are many comic incidents.

Mr. Kuite acknowledges this as one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best musicals. The score includes many delightful songs such as "A Hundred‑Million Miracles," "I Enjoy Being a Girl," "Don't Marry Me," and "Chop Suey."

The production will strive to be as professional as possible down to uniforms for the usherettes. Mr. Eugene Patrizi, an art teacher who has had experience with working on professional productions, will be in charge of the sets, lighting, and costumes.
